For readers interested in learning more about how not to be labeled as registered sex offenders, a good first step is not to rape unconscious women, no matter how good your grades are. Regardless of the strength of your GPA (weighted or unweighted), if you commit rape, there is a possibility you may someday be convicted of a sex crime. This is because of your decision to commit a sex crime instead of going for a walk, or reading a book by Cormac McCarthy. Your ability to perform calculus or play football is generally not taken into consideration in a court of law. Should you prefer to be known as ‘Good student and excellent football player Trent Mays’ rather than ‘Convicted sex offender Trent Mays,’ try stressing the studying and tackling and giving the sex crimes a miss altogether…
Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richardson are not the “stars” of the Steubenville rape trial. They aren’t the only characters in a drama playing out in eastern Ohio. And yet a CNN viewer learning about the Steubenville rape verdict is presented with dynamic, sympathetic, complicated male figures, and a nonentity of an anonymous victim, the ‘lasting effects’ of whose graphic, public sexual assault are ignored. Small wonder, then, that anyone would find themselves on the side of these men—these poor young men, who were very good at taking tests and playing sports when they were not raping their classmates.
Mallory Ortberg of Gawker, critiquing CNN’s disgusting response to the Stuebenville rape trial verdicts.
Her commentary is spot on.

Diane Sawyer interviews our 20 women senators.
Sen. Susan Collins: “I think those issues [abortion, birth control] should be settled and should not be the main focus of debate.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren: “But Senator Collins, I don’t think they are entirely settled. I mean, that’s the problem, is that there were amendments introduced to say that women wouldn’t have access to health insurance coverage for birth control. There was a question raised about whether or not we’ll really have enforcement of equal pay for equal work laws. And boy if that’s the case, then we better stand up and we better speak out strong.”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: “But if Congress was 51 percent women, you can bet your bottom dollar we would not be debating contraception.”
Sen. Patty Murray: “We should be talking about transportation infrastructure or economic development or how to solve the budget deficit, and we keep facing these amendments on abortion. It’s like can’t you just leave that alone?”
Sen. Barbara Boxer: “And they’re always brought up by men, Diane.”
Aw, girl. That’s right! Let there be a majority of women in Congress and see shit get done so fucking fast your head will spin. And they’ll even have time for their children if they want them, and their partners because they’ll be able to marry whoever they want because ladies be doin’ stuff. WOO!

Malala Yousafzai, in a 2011 interview with CNN, discussing her activism on behalf of girls seeking education in Pakistan.
It’s impossible to overestimate my esteem for this girl. Her parents are clearly amazing and she is obviously made of steel. Benazir Bhutto would have been so proud of her.

If an American woman in uniform is raped and becomes pregnant, Congress bars Tricare military insurance from paying for an abortion.
If an American woman in the Peace Corps becomes pregnant, Congress bars coverage of an abortion — and there is no explicit exception even if she is raped or her life is in danger.
When teenagers in places like Darfur, Congo or Somalia survive gang rapes, aid organizations cannot use American funds to provide an abortion.
A record number of states have curbed abortions in the last two years. According to the Guttmacher Institute, which follows reproductive health, 55 percent of American women of reproductive age now live in one of the 26 states deemed “hostile to abortion rights.”
The Republican campaign platform denounces contraceptive education in schools. Instead, it advises kids to abstain from sex until marriage.

This is completely mental. Just absolutely shameful behavior.
“never again”
This image is one of the most powerful pro-choice images I’ve ever seen. When I saw it in the newspaper I immediately cut it out and hung it on my wall.
This is not my image. I’m using it with permission from Arthur Newspaper.
Immediate goosebumps. Holy hell, this image should be everywhere.

Say What Now of the Day: The requirement that health insurers cover contraception went into effect today, and here’s what Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Kelly had to say about it:
I know in your mind you can think of times when America was attacked. One is December 7th, that’s Pearl Harbor day. The other is September 11th, and that’s the day of the terrorist attack. I want you to remember August the 1st, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom. That is a day that will live in infamy, along with those other dates.

Oh oh oh…hell no. Fuck this guy. Fuuuuuuuck him. If anyone can give me a good reason why it’s better for women to have zero control over their bodies & give birth to children they don’t want/can’t support, then you are an absolute genius & can run the country. Otherwise, please STFU & let me do with my organs as I see fit, you presumptuous, Puritanical, out-of-touch bastards.](http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m83jlcRXvg1qzpwi0o1_500.jpg)
